The State Housing Company (SHC) has commenced work on a major housing development project at Dedesua in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region as part of efforts to help address Ghana’s estimated 1.5 million housing deficit.
The project, known as the Green City Project, was officially launched during a sod-cutting ceremony attended by President John Dramani Mahama, traditional authorities, government officials, private sector partners and development stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of the State Housing Company Limited, John S. Bawah, announced that Phase One of the project would deliver 214 units of two and three-bedroom detached homes by the fourth quarter of 2027.

He explained that the first phase forms part of a broader 1,067-unit housing development planned over five years on a 200-acre land at Dedesua.
According to Mr. Bawah, the Green City Project will feature a mix of housing types, including detached and semi-detached homes as well as apartment blocks designed to meet the needs of different income groups. Recreational centres, commercial facilities and open community spaces are also expected to form part of the development.
He noted that the project was designed to align with the natural environment of the Ashanti Region, popularly known as Ghana’s “Garden City,” while ensuring access to affordable and quality housing.
Mr. Bawah said management of SHC had intensified efforts to expand housing delivery across the country since taking office in 2025, focusing on innovation, strategic partnerships and cost reduction measures to make home ownership more accessible.
He disclosed that the company intends to complete several inherited projects in Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi, with nearly 300 housing units expected to be delivered before the end of 2026.
The SHC Managing Director further revealed that redevelopment works had begun at the Kaneshie and Adenta Estates, while additional projects were expected to start soon at Effiakuma in Takoradi and Kanda in Accra.
He added that SHC was also collaborating on the Greenville District Housing Project in the Northern Region, where 40 housing units are currently under construction in the Tamale South Constituency.
Mr. Bawah said the company was preparing to revive abandoned affordable housing projects beginning in Koforidua, with similar interventions planned for Wa and Tamale.

He further disclosed that SHC was undertaking several infrastructure projects for government institutions, including the construction of regional head office buildings and residential apartment facilities for the Ghana Immigration Service.
On housing finance, Mr. Bawah announced partnerships with Republic Bank Ghana and Ecobank Ghana to provide flexible mortgage financing options for prospective homeowners.
He appealed to President Mahama to support the Green City Project with funding estimated at GH¢100 million for roads, drainage and sewage infrastructure, stating that such support would enable the company to maintain housing prices between 25 and 40 percent below prevailing market rates.
