The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC), in collaboration with the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), has announced the annual ban on drumming and noise-making ahead of the Homowo Festival celebrations.
According to the Council, the ban takes effect from Monday, May 4, 2026, to Thursday, June 4, 2026, across the Ga State as part of the traditional rites preceding the festival.
The Council, however, noted that some traditional areas including Osu, La, Teshie, Nungua, Tema, Prampram, and Ningo will observe the ban during different periods to be announced later by their respective Traditional Councils.
In a statement signed by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, the GARCC expressed concern over unlawful attempts by some individuals to enforce the ban through acts that result in the destruction of property.
The Council stressed that such conduct is unacceptable and violates the laws of Ghana.
It warned that any person or group found engaging in unlawful enforcement or causing damage to property would be dealt with according to the law.
The GARCC also appealed to religious bodies, faith-based organizations, event organizers, pubs, and other stakeholders to cooperate in ensuring the peaceful observance of the ban.
“No individual or group is permitted to enforce the ban unless duly authorized,” the statement emphasized.
The Council stated that enforcement of the directive would be carried out by the Ghana Police Service in collaboration with the Ga Traditional Council, adding that there must be no destruction of property during the exercise.
GARCC further indicated that it would continue engaging stakeholders to ensure cooperation and maintain peace throughout the period of the ban.
The public has therefore been urged to fully comply with the directive in order to preserve peace, order, and respect for tradition during the Homowo season.
