“The true strength of Ghana is found in our culture of unity, love, compassion, and care for one another. These values have sustained us through difficult times and must continue to guide us as we build a stronger and more inclusive nation. The way we honour and care for our senior citizens reflects the values we hold as a people,” the President stated.
President Mahama emphasized that senior citizens are repositories of wisdom, experience, and institutional memory whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the country’s development. He urged younger generations to draw inspiration from their dedication and work together with the elderly in advancing national development.
The luncheon, organised to honour Ghana’s senior citizens for their immense contributions to nation-building, celebrated the invaluable role older persons continue to play in preserving the country’s history, traditions, and values.
Beyond paying tribute to the elderly, the President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to improving their welfare through strengthened pension schemes to ensure retirees live in dignity after years of dedicated service to the nation.
He also encouraged senior citizens to enrol in the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, explaining that the initiative is designed to improve access to quality healthcare, particularly for vulnerable groups, including the aged.
President Mahama further reiterated his administration’s commitment to expanding social protection programmes aimed at safeguarding vulnerable members of society as part of the government’s broader agenda of restoring hope, promoting inclusive growth, and ensuring that no Ghanaian is left behind.
He concluded by appealing to all Ghanaians to cherish and protect the nation’s culture of unity, compassion, and mutual respect, noting that these enduring values remain Ghana’s greatest asset and the surest path to a stronger, more prosperous, and united nation.
