The visit took the Minister to Yeji and surrounding fishing communities, where she engaged fisherfolk, fish farmers, traditional leaders, and officials of the district assembly as part of government’s efforts to strengthen inland fisheries and decentralize support services.
Addressing stakeholders during the visit, Hon. Emilia Arthur said the ministry was determined to understand the realities confronting fishing communities outside the coastal areas in order to formulate practical policies that respond to their specific needs.
“We cannot design policies in Accra and expect them to fit every community. Pru East has huge potential in aquaculture and inland fisheries, and I’m here to see what’s working and where we need to intervene because the ministry over the years only focused on fishing on the sea, forgetting inland fishing activities,” she stated.

The Pru East District Chief Executive, Abdul Nasir Dauda, highlighted major concerns affecting fishing activities on the Volta Lake, including illegal fishing practices, inadequate government support, and delays in the supply of premix fuel to fisherfolk.
He appealed to the ministry to establish an Aquaculture Learning Centre at Yeji Senior High School and the Yeji Camp Prison to promote skills development and improve fish production in the area. He also called for the speedy disbursement of premix fuel and fishing equipment to help curb illegal fishing activities.
The Member of Parliament for Pru East, Emmanuel Kwaku Boam, commended the Minister for the visit and appealed for subsidized outboard motors to support fishermen in the district. He further called for the rehabilitation of the Yeji Harbour, which he said had deteriorated over the years.
Stakeholders in the fishing sector also raised concerns over the high cost of fish farming materials, post-harvest losses, and the lack of cold storage facilities. Traditional authorities in the area urged government to support inland fishing communities to enhance food security and economic activities on the Volta Lake.
The Minister used the occasion to outline government policies aimed at improving the fisheries sector and warned against the use of poisonous chemicals for fishing, stressing that offenders would face sanctions under the law.
As part of the visit, Hon. Emilia Arthur and her entourage toured the Yeji Harbour to assess its deteriorating condition and later visited the District Fisheries Office.
