The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced plans by government to establish a new College of Education at Azinibu in the Jomoro District of the Western Region, aimed at expanding access to teacher training and improving educational outcomes in underserved areas.
Speaking during the inauguration of the Governing Council of St. John Bosco College of Education, the Minister disclosed that the decision followed consultations with key stakeholders, including the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and other agencies within the education sector.
According to him, work on the new college is expected to commence in 2027, subject to the availability of funding, which government intends to mobilize through its proposed education financing framework. He stressed that the establishment of the institution is critical to addressing the growing demand for trained teachers in the Jomoro enclave and surrounding communities.
Hon. Iddrisu further revealed that government is exploring a partnership with Ghana National Gas Company to support the project as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility within its operational areas.
Touching on the role of St. John Bosco College of Education, the Minister commended the institution for its longstanding contribution to teacher education in Ghana, noting its strong foundation in Christian values and its legacy dating back to 1946. He charged the newly inaugurated council to uphold the college’s reputation and position it as a centre of excellence in teacher training.
He also highlighted broader reforms within the education sector, including plans to increase alumni representation on governing boards of second-cycle institutions to enhance stakeholder participation and support for schools.
In addition, the Minister hinted at ongoing efforts in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to revive inter-schools sporting competitions to help identify and nurture young talents across the country.
Hon. Iddrisu concluded by urging the council members to justify the confidence reposed in them and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of teacher education in Ghana.
