The Government has announced a nationwide two-day flood aftermath clean-up exercise aimed at restoring sanitation and reducing health risks in seven flood-affected regions following recent heavy rains.
The exercise, scheduled for Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11, 2026, will run from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each day under the supervision of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, in accordance with a directive from President John Dramani Mahama.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry, the first day of the exercise will involve all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), public and private institutions, security services, educational institutions, waste management companies and the general public.
The second day will focus on community participation, with residents, volunteer groups, community-based organisations, security agencies, MMDAs and waste management companies expected to lead intensive clean-up activities in affected communities.
To ensure maximum participation, the government has directed that all shops, markets, commercial establishments, corporate organisations and other non-essential businesses in the affected regions remain closed from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on both days. However, institutions providing essential and emergency services have been exempted from the directive.
The Ministry called on residents, transport operators, traditional leaders, religious organisations and other stakeholders to fully support the exercise, describing it as a critical national effort to restore clean, healthy and resilient communities in the aftermath of the floods.
The statement, issued by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs on July 9, 2026, urged all citizens to actively participate in the clean-up to help prevent disease outbreaks and accelerate the recovery of flood-affected communities.
